Meet Ryan
Lifted Up, Then Giving Back
As a single dad, Ryan struggled to keep up with the cost of living. Even with a full-time job, he found himself choosing between buying diapers or food. When Ryan’s pastor told him about SHIM, he finally found relief.
In 2009, Ryan received a box of food, carefully prepared to avoid allergies, from SHIM’s food pantries.
“There’s no judgment, SHIM just wants to help. Take a deep breath and reach out. Tomorrow will be a better day.”
With help from neighbors and friends, Ryan slowly rebuilt. He took on side work, became a published editor for a medical journal, and built a career in healthcare, helping develop systems that supported lifesaving care for children.
Today, Ryan is eager to give back. He stays deeply involved in Girl Scouts with his daughters and recently led his troop in hosting a food drive for SHIM.
“Excellent work by the food pantry staff and volunteers. All are welcoming, helpful and make difficult times a lot easier.” -David, food pantry participant
